In this era filled with challenges and opportunities, WASHZ will soon welcome a visionary leader, Dr Simon Probert, who will officially take up the post of Executive Headmaster in the 25-26 academic year.
Dr Probert brings with him a wealth of experience in the education industry, spanning decades. Before joining WASHZ, Dr Probert served at renowned British boarding schools for nearly a decade, where he made significant contributions as the Head of Studies and Principal Deputy Head.
Dr Probert boasts an impressive academic background, holding an EdD. in Education from the University of Bath, during which time he focused his research on the internationalisation of curricula.
Experienced in International Education
Understand the Art of Cultivating Excellence
Dr Probert attended Abingdon School, a prestigious British boys' boarding school, where he gained firsthand understanding of how elite schools define and nurture excellence.
He embarked on his educational career at a local school in the UK. Then he has served at distinguished institutions in Korea, Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, etc. Over the past decade, his exceptional teaching skills have propelled him to progressively assume the roles of Academic Director and Deputy Head. In these positions, he has cultivated extensive experience in academic coordination and management. Ranging from detailed teaching practices to macro-level administrative responsibilities, Dr Probert has developed a deep understanding that only excellent schools can cultivate successful pupils.
He firmly believes that every pupil can achieve excellence, and the true essence of education lies in unleashing their potential and guiding them to challenge themselves constantly. He commented on the importance of creating a learning environment filled with challenges and opportunities, paying attention to pupils' academic performance and their holistic development, thereby broadening the width of their lives:
“Academically, excellence ensures our students to go wherever they want to go in the world, but equally ensuring that they develop much broader interests whether that's music, sports, drama or debating.”
Dr Probert
Beyond academic development, Dr Probert places great importance on building a community. He believes that joint efforts at home and school are needed to build a campus with a genuine sense of belonging that enables pupils to grow healthily without unwanted distractions, commenting:
"I will be very interested to talk to parents about how we can continue to grow the sense of community as a school."
Dr Probert
Self-improvement before Educating Pupils
Treat Education with Research Spirit
Dr Probert is a steadfast practitioner of lifelong learning, an important driving force behind his pursuit of an EdD. His doctoral research examines the internationalisation of curricula, particularly the development of international curricula and schools in China.
Dr Probert's research has laid a solid foundation for his educational career, establishing a robust base for the practice of international education at the highest levels. He integrates advanced educational ideas into teaching and management, striving to create a forward-thinking international education framework that guides students to become individuals capable of communicating freely with the world.
Dr Probert also emphasises work-life balance. He excels in sports, with cycling, running, and football among his strengths. He also has a passion for jazz, playing the piano and saxophone.
At WASHZ, he hopes to inspire every pupil with his love for education and life, encouraging them to embrace their dreams and become "interesting souls."
A Greater Understanding of Chinese Children
Insights Gained from a Multicultural Family
Dr Probert is a professional educator who grew up in the UK but has since taken root in China, having lived here for nearly 20 years and is proficient in Chinese, closely embracing Chinese culture. These and his other multi-national teaching experiences have given him strong insights into multiculturalism.
Within his bicultural family, Dr Probert insists on creating a growth environment where Chinese and English cultures coexist. He hopes his children will identify with their Chinese identity and culture, encouraging them to reach native-level proficiency in both languages and to view issues from different perspectives. At WASHZ, he hopes to replicate this immersive multicultural experience, further promoting an inclusive and open campus culture that guides pupils to respect and understand different cultures.
Moreover, he is intimately aware that developing pupils' bilingual abilities and cross-cultural thinking is crucial in today's increasingly globalised world. This not only enhances his teaching ability but also enables him to be a bridge connecting Eastern and Western cultures. He will use his experiences to inspire pupils to explore the world bravely and become talented individuals with a global vision.
Dr Probert and Mr Mooney
Passing the Torch of Excellence
Since its founding, WASHZ has emerged as a trailblazing newcomer, charting multiple milestones in international education under the 5 years of leadership of Mr Tig Mooney.
Academically, our IGCSE and A-Level results have continued to improve, with 90% of graduates from the past two cohorts entering the world's top 50 universities. At the same time, the arrival of British scholars this academic year has further strengthened our international education atmosphere. When it comes to enrichment activities, Wycombe Abbey pupils are excelling in many fields, with the rugby team competing internationally, musical talents supporting the annual drama performances, and artistic talents showcasing their abilities across campus events. Achievement has been deeply ingrained in WASHZ's genes.
With Dr Probert's arrival in the new academic year, WASHZ will exhibit greater vitality and aspiration. Under his leadership, WASHZ will promote even greater academic growth and holistic development. We look forward to welcoming him!
